Exhibition Proposal
I have always loved receiving hand written letters. There is something so raw in reading someone's thoughts through pen and paper. It takes time to sit down and develop what you'd like to say. This is something that has gotten quite lost in our technology-driven world.
The exhibition will focus on the idea of love being passed through snail mail, alongside its evolution spanning from WWI until present day. Delving into the intimate “Dear John” letters of those coping, the audience will feel the depths of the true love expressed through the handwritten exchange.
Today’s communications revolve around the instant gratification of social media while the art of letter writing has become almost extinct.
As the end of the exhibition tour nears, the visitor will be given the chance to reflect and meditate on what they’d like to say to a past, current or future loved one on paper, added anonymously to the visual collection at the end of the exhibition experience. In the end, amidst war and conflict, love never fails.
This piece was also inspired by my grandparent's wedding photo, referenced throughout the campaign.
Song of Inspiration: Till We Meet Again
Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu,
When the clouds roll by I'll come to you,
Then the skies will seem more blue,
Down in lovers lane my dearie,
Wedding bells will ring so merrily,
Every tear will be a memory,
So wait and pray each night for me,
Till we meet again.
Written by Richard A. Whiting, the lyrics by Raymond B. Egan in 1918
Written during the Great War, the song tells of the parting of a soldier
and his sweetheart
